How does Gutter know what's a chapter, a subheading or a dedication?
The AI reads your manuscript's structure and recognizes chapter numbers and titles, subheadings, part titles, chapter openings, epigraphs, block quotes, scene breaks, the dedication, your own title page, your copyright page and your table of contents.
Before typesetting, it shows you what it understood, and you can correct any block.
!KEEP IN MINDIt only tags the structure: it never writes or changes a single word of your text.
02
What is “RAE professional formatting” and does it change my text?
It's an optional first step you can turn off with a checkbox when you upload your Word file. It standardizes typography according to the RAE (Royal Spanish Academy) rules: angle quotes «», em dashes (—) for dialogue, ellipses (…), double spaces and spaces before punctuation.
It only changes punctuation marks and spaces: it doesn't fix spelling or touch any words.
!KEEP IN MINDIf you uncheck it, your text is typeset with the punctuation exactly as you wrote it.
03
What happens to the footnotes and tables in my Word file?
Your footnotes are kept: in the PDF they appear as footnotes, and in the ePub they become endnotes with links back and forth. Tables stay as real tables, merged cells included.
Gutter supports tables of up to 2,000 rows or 8,000 cells each.
!KEEP IN MINDYou can't change the font or size of footnotes or inline quotes through the chat.
04
What if my Word file already has a title page, copyright page or table of contents?
Whatever you include is respected: your copyright page is placed as is, in the book's typography, and if you include your own table of contents or title page, Gutter detects it and asks what you'd prefer. Nothing is made up: the title page and copyright details come from what you wrote.
Anything you leave out of the interior (back cover copy, author bio) is set aside so it doesn't end up in the book.
05
Does Gutter warn me about copy-paste errors in my Word file?
Yes, before you pay. It looks for repeated headings that slipped in when copying and pasting (for example, “Notes:” over and over), empty headings and back-to-back duplicate headings. It tells you how many there are, what's causing them and, if it can calculate it, how many pages you'd save by removing them from your Word file.
It only looks and counts: it never touches your text.
06
Can the AI change any words in my book?
No. The AI only decides the formatting. Every delivery is checked character by character against your original manuscript, and if a single word doesn't match, the book isn't delivered. It's an automatic check, not a promise.
