01
How do I move an image to a different place in my book?
Drag the image in the preview and drop it onto another paragraph, and Gutter places it there. You can also ask in the chat: two paragraphs down, at the start of chapter 3, after a paragraph that begins with certain text, or at the end of the book.
Each image has a label with its number, so you can refer to it (“image 3”).
HOW TO ASK FOR IT
Move image 2 down two paragraphs
Put image 4 at the beginning of chapter 3
!KEEP IN MINDGutter doesn't place images “on page 12”, because page numbers change if the book is repaginated. Use a paragraph or a chapter as your reference instead.
02
How do I resize and align an image in my book?
Tell it the width you want (as a percentage of the text block, from 10 to 100) or just say “smaller” or “bigger”, and align it left, center or right. The labels in the preview show each image's width and resolution (ppi).
HOW TO ASK FOR IT
Make image 2 60 % wide
Center image 5
Make the first image smaller
03
Can I add a border to an image or add space around it?
Yes. You can add a border (thickness and color), remove it, and adjust the spacing above and below the image, from “tight to the text” to lots of breathing room.
HOW TO ASK FOR IT
Add a thin black border to image 3
More space between image 2 and the text
Remove the border from image 3
04
How do I round the corners of an image or crop it?
Ask for rounded corners (small, medium, large, or circular) or a crop: square, landscape, panoramic or portrait. Cropping only changes how the image looks in the book. Your original file stays untouched.
HOW TO ASK FOR IT
Round the corners of image 3
Crop image 1 to a square
Make the author photo circular
05
How do I make an image full-page or full-bleed?
The “full page” option places the image on a page of its own, centered, within the margins and without distorting it. If you want it to reach the edge of the paper, ask for it “full bleed” and it will extend all the way to the edge.
HOW TO ASK FOR IT
Make image 2 full-page
Image 6 full bleed
06
Can I remove an image from my book?
Yes. Just ask and the image disappears from the layout. If it had a caption, the caption stays, because it's part of your book's text and Gutter never deletes text. It will let you know so you can decide what to do.
HOW TO ASK FOR IT
Remove image 5
!KEEP IN MINDYour Word file isn't changed. The image is only hidden in the layout.
07
What resolution do my images need for Amazon KDP?
For good print quality, KDP recommends at least 300 ppi. Gutter measures the actual resolution of each image as placed on the page and warns you about any that fall short. The images in your Word file are optimized for KDP (for example, CMYK is converted to RGB, and images are kept under 5 MB in the ePub).
08
Can I add new photos in Gutter?
No. Gutter typesets what's already in your Word file. If you want another image, add it to your Word file wherever you like and upload it again (or use “update manuscript”). Then you can move it, resize it or adjust it just like the others.
!KEEP IN MINDIt also doesn't apply shadows, filters, black and white or rotation, because the current typesetting engine can't do them.
