The basics of getting your book typeset: what to upload, what you see before paying, and how to request changes.
Upload your manuscript as a Word (.docx) or LibreOffice (.odt) file, just as it is, with its images, tables and footnotes. There's no need to prepare templates or apply styles beforehand.
Gutter reads your document's structure (chapters, parts, quotes, dedication…) and typesets it. The maximum file size is 40 MB.
Yes. Gutter typesets your entire book with a watermark, free and with no card required. You see the real result (pages, margins, typography, images) and can request changes by chat.
You only pay when you want to download the clean PDF and ePub, without the watermark.
Type what you want in the chat, in your own words, just as you'd tell a typesetter. You don't need to know the technical terms. Whether you say “header”, “page header” or “running header”, it understands the same thing.
Gutter tells you what it understood (“Done: larger chapter titles, 22 pt”) and the book updates in the preview. If your request is ambiguous, it asks you a specific question with two or three options instead of guessing.
You can undo any adjustment with one click on “Undo”. And if a change went too far or not far enough, just say “a bit more” or “a bit less” and it fine-tunes it from the current value.
Questions and clarifications don't count as changes.
Write in English, Spanish or Portuguese, and the chat replies in the same language. Your book's text stays exactly as you wrote it.
You can upload the new version of your Word file right from the preview. Gutter carries over the adjustments you'd already made (formatting, drop cap, running header, images). It recognizes each paragraph by its text and each image by its content, so everything stays in place even if you've added or moved things.
If there's anything it can't carry over, it lets you know. This is available while you're in the preview, before you pay.
