Drop caps, running headers and page numbers: how to add them to your book

The details that make a page look professionally published: the big letter at the start, what goes at the top, and where the page number sits.

01

How do I add a drop cap to each chapter of my book?

Ask for it in the chat and Gutter makes the first letter of each chapter bigger. By default it spans three lines of text; you can ask for a subtler one (2 lines) or a bigger one (4), and change its color or font.

It skips chapters that start with an em dash, quotation marks, an opening “¿” or a number, where it would look off.

HOW TO ASK FOR IT
Add a drop cap to every chapter
Make it subtler, 2 lines
Remove the drop cap
KEEP IN MINDIt's included in the print PDF. The ePub doesn't have it.
02

How do I put the book title or author name at the top of every page (running header)?

Ask for a running header and choose what it shows: the title, the author, or both, alternating on even and odd pages. The classic publishing style is the author on even pages and the title on odd pages, and that's what Gutter does if you just say “title and author.”

It doesn't appear on chapter opening pages, just like in any book. You can change the size, italics, color and font.

HOW TO ASK FOR IT
Put the author at the top of even pages and the title on odd pages
Add a running header with the book title
Remove the running header
KEEP IN MINDIt can only contain text (title or author), not images or logos. It's included in the print PDF, not in the ePub.
03

Does the running header meet Amazon KDP requirements?

Yes. The running header is always placed inside the KDP safe zone: at least 0.25 inches from the edge, or 0.375 inches if your book has bleed. If your top margin is too small for it to fit, Gutter increases it just enough and lets you know in the chat.

04

How do I change where the page numbers go in my book?

The page number (or folio) always goes in the footer, and you can choose: center, left, right, outside corner (right on odd pages and left on even pages) or none. You can also change its style (“12” or “-12-”) and its size.

The title page, copyright page and blank pages don't get a number.

HOW TO ASK FOR IT
Put the page number in the outside corner
Page numbers between dashes
Remove the page numbers
KEEP IN MINDIt can't go at the top. If you want something at the top of the page, that's what the running header is for.
