01
What fonts can I use in my book?
Gutter includes five font families, each with four styles (regular, italic, bold and bold italic): EB Garamond (a classic book typeface, the go-to for fiction), Lora (a contemporary, highly readable serif), Playfair Display (high-contrast, for headings with personality), Montserrat (a geometric sans-serif) and Arimo (a neutral sans-serif, equivalent to Arial).
If you ask for Arial, you'll get Arimo, which has the same metrics. If you ask for a font that isn't available, Gutter suggests the closest match in style.
HOW TO ASK FOR IT
Change the book's font to Lora
I want the headings in Playfair Display
Set all the typography to Montserrat
!KEEP IN MINDOther fonts, like Times New Roman or Calibri, are replaced with the closest match among these five.
02
How do I change the font size in my book?
Ask for it for the body text or any type of heading. You can give a number (“12 points”) or ask in relative terms (“a bit bigger”). Sizes from 6 to 72 points are supported.
Changing the body text size changes the page count, and therefore the price: you'll see it in the preview.
HOW TO ASK FOR IT
Make the text 11 pt
Make the chapter titles bigger
Make the quotes a bit smaller
03
How do I change the line spacing and paragraph spacing?
Ask for line spacing the way you'd say it (“more breathing room”, “1.5 spacing”, “double”); values from 1 to 3 are supported. Spacing before and after paragraphs, from 0 to 200 points, works the same way.
It's one of the things that most changes how a page looks and how many pages your book has.
HOW TO ASK FOR IT
More space between lines
Line spacing of 1.3
A bit more space between paragraphs
04
How do I add or remove paragraph indentation?
First-line indent (the space at the start of each paragraph) and left indent can be added, adjusted or removed for the body text and for blocks that support them, like quotes.
HOW TO ASK FOR IT
Remove the paragraph indents
Make the first-line indent a bit bigger
05
Can I justify the text or center the headings?
Yes. Alignment can be left, centered, right or justified, and you can set it for the body text or any block: headings, subtitles, quotes, the dedication…
HOW TO ASK FOR IT
Justify the text
Align the chapter titles to the left
Center the dedication
06
Can I make headings bold, italic, underlined or a different color?
Yes: bold, italic, underline and color, for the body text or any block. Ask for a color by name (black, navy blue, burgundy, gold, turquoise…) or by its hex code.
HOW TO ASK FOR IT
Put the subtitles in italics
Make the chapter titles navy blue
Remove the bold from the section headings
!KEEP IN MINDSmall caps can't be applied through the chat yet.Keep in mind that a book printed in black and white won't show color.
07
Which parts of my book can I format separately?
You can adjust each of these separately: the body text, chapter titles, part titles, subtitles, section headings, block quotes, the copyright page, the dedication, the half-title page, the title and author on the title page, the table of contents and the title page ornament.
You can also change the font for the whole book at once (“all the typography”), as well as the page margins.
HOW TO ASK FOR IT
Make the part titles bigger
Put the table of contents in italics
Set the title on the title page in Playfair Display
!KEEP IN MINDFootnotes and inline quotes can't be formatted through the chat.
08
How do I make each chapter start on a new page?
Page breaks before chapter, part or section titles can be turned on and off. In novels, each chapter also opens on a right-hand (odd) page, just like in a printed book.
HOW TO ASK FOR IT
Make each chapter start on a new page
Remove the page break before subtitles
