Every type of book has its own rules. When you upload your Word file, you pick the right one and Gutter starts from the matching layout.
The novel layout starts with EB Garamond at 12 pt with 1.5 line spacing, mirrored margins (wider on the spine side), page numbers in the footer, every chapter opening on an odd page, and a dedicated title page and dedication page. It also works for nonfiction and essays.
In poetry, everything is left-aligned, titles and lines included, with more breathing room between lines and between stanzas. Each poem starts on a new page and the page number goes between hyphens (-1-). In the ePub, lines keep their line breaks and aren't justified as if they were prose.
Thesis mode uses double (or 1.5) line spacing, standard indentation, numbered sections (1, 1.1, 1.1.2), continuous footnotes, long quotes as block quotes without italics, and page numbers in the footer. Sections like the preface, introduction or epilogue are left unnumbered.
Illustrated mode is for books with full-page images. It starts from the same layout as the novel and adds a €0.15 per-page surcharge on top of the rate to cover image processing. All the image options in this guide (moving, cropping, full page…) can be used with any book type.
