What it is

What a book interior is

The interior is the design of every page of your book: typography, margins, page numbers, chapter openers and how images are handled. It's separate from the cover — and it's what decides whether Amazon KDP accepts your file for print without errors.

The same spread: on the left, the manuscript as it leaves Word; on the right, the editorial layout — larger gutter margin, first-line indents, a composed chapter title and folio.

The gutter (inner) margin grows with the page count: the thicker the book, the more inner margin it needs so the text isn't swallowed by the binding. If the book uses full-bleed images, add 0.125 in of bleed on the outer edges.

outer margin · 0,25″ gutter margin · 0,375″–0,875″
The inner (gutter) margin must be larger than the outer one: paper sinks into the binding. KDP requires 0.375″ to 0.875″ of gutter depending on page count; outer minimum, 0.25″.
